9/19/2017: Commercial Fishing Safety Advisory Committee seeking applicants for membership
The Commercial Fishing Safety Advisory Committee provides advice and makes recommendations to the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security on various matters relating to the safe operation of commercial fishing industry vessels. Completed applications should be submitted to the Coast Guard on or before Nov. 20, 2017.

9/19/2017: Availability of NVIC 02-13 Change 1, Guidance Implementing the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006
This change incorporates the 2014 amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) related to financial liability for repatriation of seafarers and financial security relating to shipowners’ liability in cases of seafarer injury or death into the existing voluntary compliance framework for vessels that engage on international voyages to those countries that are signatory to the MLC.

9/19/2017: Nomination period open for Rear Adm. Richard E. Bennis award for excellence in maritime security
The Coast Guard has set Jan. 31, 2018 as the deadline to submit nominations for the Rear Admiral Richard E. Bennis Award for Excellence in Maritime Security. This biennial award serves to highlight and recognize outstanding achievements and contributions of the maritime community with regards to implementation of Maritime Transportation Security Act, or MTSA, requirements and other maritime security best practices in safeguarding our nation’s marine transportation system.

9/8/2017: Cyber risk NVIC comment period extended 30 days to October 11
The Coast Guard received requests to extend the comment period by 30 days due to the conditions caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which have prevented some members of the public from submitting comments by the original deadline.

9/7/2017: Cancellation of next week’s MERMAC, MEDMAC meetings in Seattle, Washington
The Coast Guard is cancelling the MEDMAC and MERPAC meetings currently scheduled for September 12-15. Both meetings will be rescheduled as soon as possible. Future announcements of new dates will appear in the Federal Register and will be shared via Maritime Commons.

9/5/2017: Rear Adm. John Nadeau, assistant commandant for prevention, gives keynote at International Safety @ Sea Conference
Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy Rear Adm. John Nadeau recently spoke at the International Safety @ Sea Conference in Singapore, organized by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore. The conference was convened to share best practices for safety at sea and included over 250 international maritime professionals. Nadeau’s keynote address August 22 kicked off a week of activity that included the inaugural ‘Community of Practice’ Forum, where 23 different maritime administrations, classification societies and NGOs focused on the topic of ferry safety.
