5/2/2018: Audio file of merchant mariner Medical Certification webinar available on line

In March, the U.S. Committee on the Maritime Transportation System hosted a webinar on the Medical Certification process that is part of the merchant mariner credential. National Maritime Center’s commanding officer Capt. Kirsten Martin and Chief of the Medical Evaluations division Dr. Laura Torres-Reyes had the opportunity to address the upcoming changes in the merchant mariner medical certification and take questions from webinar participants. CMTS recently posted the audio recording of the webinar on its website. In this post, Maritime Commons is sharing the link for our readers who are interested in the subject or who were unable to participate.

4/19/2018: U.S. Flag interpretations on the ISM Code

This post discusses a recently released Mission Management System Work Instruction regarding the U.S. Flag Interpretations on the ISM Code to provide supplemental flag state guidance regarding the development, implementation, and verification of safety management systems on U.S. Flag vessels. This work instruction also includes specific provisions to assist in assessing risks and developing contingency plans for emergency shipboard situations, and is designed to be used in conjunction with CVC-WI-003, USCG Oversight of Safety Management Systems on U.S. Flag Vessels. Industry stakeholders and Recognized Organizations are encouraged to reference this guidance when developing, implementing, and verifying SMSs in order to promote a strong safety culture throughout the U.S. flag fleet.

4/18/2018: Salvage and Marine Firefighting Verifications in conjunction with Vessel Response Plans: The First Year

In this post, the assistant commandant for response policy provides an overview of the scenario-based salvage and marine firefighting verification process, instituted in April 2017, and a look at what’s been accomplished during the program’s first year to evaluate compliance specific to applicable salvage and marine firefighting planning criteria.

4/13/2018: Marine Safety Information Bulletin 03-18, Oily bilge water management

This bulletin summarizes key legal requirements for the proper management and disposal of oily mixtures by oceangoing vessels under 400 gross tons. An “oceangoing ship [or vessel]” means any vessel that operates on international voyages, is certified for coastwise service beyond three miles, or operates beyond three nautical miles at any time. Oceangoing vessels falling into this category include – but are not limited to – tugs, ferries, shuttle vessels, commercial fishing vessels, and tour boats.
