The Coast Guard’s Office of Design and Engineering Standards published Policy Letter 01-18: “Equivalency Determination-FRP Gratings Conforming to ASTM F3059,” that provides guidance on the acceptance of Fiber Reinforced Plastic gratings as equivalent to steel on inspected vessels, including mobile offshore drilling units and floating production platforms.

As a testament of our joint efforts with the offshore oil and gas sectors, we are pleased to highlight some of our accomplishments from this past year in the 2017 Joint Activity Summary. We believe that data sharing helps establish clarity with stakeholders and also provides industry with confidence that the federal government is continuously improving its approach to consistent regulatory inspection and enforcement. As noted in the Commandant’s Final Action Memo on the sinking of the S.S. El Faro, the Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance is initiating a Concentrated Inspection Campaign for all U.S. flag vessels fitted with open lifeboats. The purpose of the campaign is to ensure that these critical lifesaving appliances are maintained in working order and ready for immediate use.
